Theragun Relief percussion massage gun with triangle grip

Theragun Relief Review India: Is the Cheapest Theragun Worth It?

•

Quick answer: The Theragun Relief is Therabody's simplest and gentlest massage gun. At the time of writing it costs ₹11,999 in Navy and ₹14,999 in Greige Sand at WOD Armour. It suits beginners, desk workers, older family members and anyone who finds bigger massage guns too intense. It has one button, three speeds, a 10 mm stroke, three attachments and about 120 minutes of battery. There is no Bluetooth, no travel case and no wall adapter in the box. If you train hard and want deep work on your quads and glutes, spend more on a Theragun Prime.

What is the Theragun Relief?

Therabody calls Relief its "gentlest level of percussive massage therapy". It keeps the Theragun triangle grip, which lets you reach your own shoulders and lower back, but drops the extras found on pricier models. There is no screen, no app control and no heat. You get a single button that turns the device on and cycles through low, medium and high speed. Each speed shows on an LED.

The stroke (amplitude) is 10 mm. The Prime and Pro Plus use 16 mm, so the Relief taps less deeply into the muscle. Gentleness is the whole point of this model, not a flaw.

What reviewers say

Independent reviews agree on what the Relief is good for and where it falls short.

  • Easy to use. Esquire liked that it needs no app, and found the low setting was enough for feet and calves. Shape's testers found it easy and intuitive and said it stayed fairly quiet.
  • Gentle by design. Good Housekeeping UK pointed to the 10 mm stroke against 16 mm on the Pro Plus and said it is not aimed at hardcore athletes. SELF named it the best Theragun for newcomers.
  • Limited power. Shape's verdict was that it "may not be strong enough for some". Several reviewers suggest another model for more intense problems.
  • App routines still help. Apartment Therapy found the guided routines in the Therabody app useful, even though the gun does not pair with the app.

On Reddit, Therabody's own account recommended the Relief as the "simpler and more budget-friendly" everyday option in an r/TheraBody thread. It added that people who have found other massage guns too weak should lean towards the Prime.

Is the Theragun Relief powerful enough?

For everyday tightness, yes. Think of a stiff neck after a long day at a laptop, tight calves after a walk or run, or a sore lower back. Its shorter stroke and three speeds feel comfortable on sensitive areas, which also makes it easy to hand to parents.

For heavy lifters, CrossFit athletes and anyone with large, dense leg muscles, probably not. Push hard into the quads or glutes and a gentle gun can feel like it is only skimming the surface. In that case look at the 16 mm Theragun Prime 6th Gen (₹25,999 at the time of writing).

Relief vs Theragun Mini

The Theragun Mini 3rd Gen is smaller and easier to carry, and it has Bluetooth. Being palm-sized, though, it is harder to use on your own mid-back. The Relief costs less and its handle gives better reach. We compare the two in more detail in Theragun Mini 3.0 vs Theragun Relief. If you want heat, read our Theragun Mini Plus review.

Relief vs Theragun Prime

The Prime has a 16 mm stroke, five speeds and Bluetooth control. At the time of writing it costs about ₹14,000 more. Buy the Prime if you train several times a week and want deeper muscle work. Buy the Relief if comfort and simplicity matter more to you than intensity.

Relief vs Hypervolt Go 3

The Hypervolt Go 3 gives you five speeds, a longer battery and a 2-year warranty at WOD Armour, but it has no triangle handle. See our Hypervolt Go 3 review.

How to use the Theragun Relief

  1. Attach a head with the device off. Line the attachment up with the tip of the arm and push it on. To change it, hold the grip in one hand, hold the plastic connector with the other and pull firmly. Keep your fingers out of the gap between the attachment and the arm.
  2. Turn it on. Long-press the button.
  3. Pick a speed. Short-press to cycle through low, medium and high. Start low.
  4. Glide, don't dig. Therabody recommends about 15–20 seconds on each area with light to moderate pressure, and no more than 2 minutes on any one area.
  5. Turn it off. It does not shut off on its own, so long-press the button firmly until it stops.

Which head should you use? The Standard Ball is for all-over use, the Dampener for tender or bony areas, and the Thumb for the lower back and knots. For speed choice in general, see our guide to massage gun speed settings.

Charging and the battery light

Turn the Relief off before charging, because it will not run while plugged in. It charges over USB-C, and Therabody says a full charge takes about 90 minutes. Only a cable is included, so use a phone charger you already own. While it charges, the button LED flashes, and it turns solid green when the battery is full. To check the battery when the gun is off, tap the button once:

  • flashing orange or red means low
  • flashing blue means medium
  • flashing green means high
  • solid green means full

Therabody's regional pages describe the low-battery colour slightly differently, so treat orange and red as the same warning. The device is not waterproof, so clean it with a wipe only.

What the research says about massage guns

Keep your expectations realistic. A 2023 systematic review in the Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology pooled 11 studies. It found that massage guns can improve short-term range of motion and flexibility and help some recovery measures, such as muscle stiffness. It found no benefit for strength, balance, agility or explosive performance, and some studies showed a drop. One 2020 study by Konrad and colleagues found that 5 minutes of percussive massage on the calves increased ankle range of motion without reducing muscle performance. The review also advises against using a massage gun just before explosive lifts or sprints. A massage gun is not a treatment for injury. See a doctor or physiotherapist about pain that persists or worsens.

Who should buy the Theragun Relief?

  • Buy it if you are new to massage guns, sit at a desk all day, want something gentle for parents, or want the Theragun triangle grip for the least money.
  • Skip it if you need deep-tissue force for heavy training, want Bluetooth control or heat, or need the smallest possible gun for travel.

No. Therabody says Relief is not Bluetooth compatible, but you can still follow the guided routines in the Therabody app.

How long does the Theragun Relief battery last and how long does it take to charge?

Therabody lists about 120 minutes of battery life and about 90 minutes for a full charge over USB-C. A cable is included but no wall adapter.

How many speeds does the Theragun Relief have?

Three: low, medium and high. Short-press the button to switch between them.

The bottom line
