  • Lactate clearance and heart-rate recovery: no meaningful effect. Despite being the single most-repeated claim in gym marketing.
  • Creatine kinase (a muscle-damage marker): inconsistent. Wide variance, nothing you can rely on.

A 2024 randomised crossover trial published in Sport Sciences for Health put 16 trained cyclists through intermittent sequential pneumatic compression versus a sham condition. Result: compression reduced the post-exercise haemodilution response and significantly improved perceived recovery — but produced no improvement in subsequent power output. A 2021 critically appraised topic in the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation reached a similar conclusion for endurance athletes: immediate pain relief comparable to massage, without extended functional benefit.

What compression boots will not do

Being straight about this is the difference between a tool you use well and a purchase you resent:

  • They will not add watts. No controlled trial has shown a subsequent-performance benefit in trained cyclists.
